The mundane IS your meaningful life

Today is not an obstacle between you and the life you're trying to create.

Today is the actual building material.

Chances are you found me because you’re carrying a heavy load and are looking for some spiritual fresh air. Between deadlines at work, endless household chores, school pick-ups, and managing everyone else’s calendar, you might feel like you’re constantly running a marathon with no finish line. You’re navigating life by taking care of things, fulfilling roles, and checking off tasks, all while feeling like you’ve lost touch with who you actually are beneath it all.

When living in hijacked survival mode, doing all the things that need doing, your nervous system becomes accustomed to movement and constant stimulation. Which leads to being convinced that stopping, resting, or slowing down is dangerous. But what is actually true is that slowing down is not only necessary, it is safe to allow.

And I don’t mean slowing down in the instagram perfect way of taking a solo weekend in the mountains to journal and breathe, or hiring people to help you (though getting help is awesome!), or just not doing any of the things that need doing throughout the day, week, month etc.

I mean slowing yourself down, inside. Letting your nervous system rest in the school pick up line, at the grocery store, while going from meeting to meeting at work.

Picture a puzzle where you only receive one piece a day. That single piece locks into yesterday’s piece and acts as the bridge to tomorrow's. Life isn't built in a frantic rush to finish the picture all at once; it’s a masterpiece assembled moment by moment. And those individual moments are exquisite, to be savoured, enjoyed, remembered.

When we spend our days just "getting through" them, waiting for the weekend, the next vacation, or some distant milestone to finally relax, we miss the actual substance of our lives. True peace and spiritual fitness aren't found in external validation or an empty to-do list. They are cultivated right here, right now, in the middle of the mundane.

And I reiterate that you don't need an hours-long existential retreat to find yourself again. Your brain is just jonesing for HOW THEN isn’t it?

My love, you simply need to let your spirit lead instead of your stress. The beauty you’re searching for isn't hiding in a life free of responsibilities—it is waiting in the small, quiet spaces you can create today; by being more HERE, in your body, not in your brain.

  • Softness over speed: Walk a little slower. Breathe a little deeper. Let your body relax its shoulders, even while doing the dishes or folding laundry.

  • Soak in the ordinary: Notice the warmth of your morning coffee, the sound of the wind, or the feel of your child’s hand in yours. These aren't just details; they are your life happening in real time.

  • Remember who you are: You are not defined solely by your job title, your mothering, or your household management. You are a whole person, evolving day by day.

Living present, confident, knowing we have it handled AND we want to soak it all up, that’s how we build the masterpiece. Because today MATTERS. It’s one piece of the puzzle, a critical piece (ever finish a puzzle only to realize a piece is missing! ARG!!!). That missing piece is TODAY my sister. Do not overlook it. Because tomorrow will come (and with it, tomorrow’s troubles, …Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34 NIV)

TODAY’S job is the ONE PIECE. Today is the bridge between your past and your future. And YOU ARE THE PIECE that connects it. And if you keep rushing past yourself today, you miss the only part of your life you can actually experience. The NOW.

Life is always going to have demands, ups and downs, lulls and races. Your nervous system, your brain, are always going to be analyzing for solutions, safety and the next thing. Things like:

  • School forms

  • Work deadlines

  • Bills

  • Dreams that stay on a someday shelf

  • Marital troubles

  • Changes in your adult friendships

But your spirit can take you higher, further, bird’s eye view of…..

  • A belly laugh

  • A really good cup of coffee

  • A dog barking

  • A song you haven't heard in years

  • The smell of your kid's hair

  • The wind on your face

  • The birds outside your window

  • The person sitting beside you

And among all this the mundane doing, we actually find that  the mundane IS your meaningful life. Where the beauty is hiding and where spiritual fitness takes off, and your body slows down - in the grocery store, at bedtime, with morning coffee, in traffic etc.

You don't have to react to every physiological signal your body sends you. You don’t have to let urgency lead. You don’t have to treat every thought like an instruction.

And instead become grounded enough to meet reality as yourself. Calm, steady and capable.

Because you don't need to rush through today to get to your future; your future is actually being built through today.

So before you go back to the list of doing the things, take a short pause. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath and feel the ground beneath you.
